How to take care of my vacuum cleaner? (Part I)

Vacuum cleaners are one of the essential appliances for deep cleaning of the home. Their suction capacity makes them especially useful in fabrics and removal of dust mites, small particles and embedded dirt.
There are several types of vacuum cleaners, depending on the use in each home, which we analyzed in a previous post. Now let's address the care to keep them in perfect working order and avoid breakdowns, loss of suction power or malfunctions.

Main vacuum cleaners are the best way to keep them in perfect working order.

The main problems seen in appliance repair shops regarding vacuum cleaners answer these questions:

"My vacuum cleaner vacuums poorly"
"My vacuum cleaner smells burning (or gets too hot)"
"My broom brush won't move"
"My vacuum cleaner smells bad"
"My vacuum cleaner's battery life is short"
"The vacuum cleaner doesn't work"

In this entry, in the first part of this list of maintenance and care tips, we will try to solve these problems or, better, we will explain how to avoid these small breakdowns and malfunctions. First  we will take into account the common elements of vacuum cleaners, and then, we will address the two types of sled vacuum cleaners:  WITH bag and WITHOUT bag

.

.

Vacuum cleaner hoses and accessories (brushes, nozzles) are parts that can be composed of several moving parts: rings, sockets, or connecting tubes). Over time and due to use these parts wear out and begin to leak air, thus the vacuum cleaner loses part of its vacuuming power. Keep the tubes and accessories in good condition and, if you can, clean with less impetus.

The lids on sled or broom vacuum cleaners, is the housing where the bag or canister of the appliance is located. These are sealed to the rest of the appliance by a gasket. Over time, these are parts that can become deformed. They can also suffer from the heat given off by the motor. To avoid overheating, change vacuum bags and filters frequently. This replacement part can be changed very easily on all vacuum cleaner models, you can see an example in this video.

.

The cable collector is the part that connects the vacuum cleaner motor power supply to the electrical power supply. When this part suffers a malfunction, the vacuum cleaner stops working completely. This part breaks when we insistently pull the cable once it has reached its limit. We try to reach it, but we can't, and many vacuum cleaners have colored signals that warn us that the cable has reached its end.

The cable reel, or cable drum, is an internal part and requires some skill to be replaced.

Sled vacuum cleaners

.

These are all the classic vacuum cleaners with a hose and tubes, which we pull when cleaning.

Bag vacuum cleaners.

Change bags frequently. An overfilling causes overheating of the motor, loss of suction capacity and bad smells (if you have a pet, pet with hair, be careful to change the bags more frequently, otherwise, the inside of the vacuum cleaner ends up absorbing the bad smells and you should ALWAYS use an air freshener to disguise them).

Bagged vacuum cleaners

Clean the bags more often.

On specific occasions: cleaning of small building sites, wood sanding, suction of very fine dust, etc. the bag does not appear to be very full, but the fine dust has completely covered the walls of the bag and the result is as if it were indeed full. When the dust you are cleaning is very fine, change the bag even more frequently.

Higher capacity and durability due to its more porous fabric. Difficult to break. They tend to overfill, since the loss of suction is very gradual and not very noticeable.

Classic paper bags can break if they are too full, check the condition of your bag frequently to avoid damage to the appliance's motor.

Bagless (filter) vacuum cleaners

.

In this type of appliance it is essential to monitor, clean and replace filters frequently. The entire operation of a bagless vacuum cleaner depends on the good condition of the various filter systems. When the filters become excessively dirty they can be cleaned, but they must also be replaced at least once a year. Often it is not explained to us when we buy the vacuum cleaner, but:if you do not have to change the bags, you have to change the filters.

.

The filter that collects the smallest particles and dust mites. Although some manufacturers indicate that they can be washed with water, it is not highly recommended. They are made of fibers that, in contact with water, become caked and lose their breathability. Clean them with a soft brush or vacuum them with another vacuum cleaner. When they break or the vacuum cleaner does not vacuum properly, they must be replaced.

.

There are a multitude of materials for making these filters. They are usually washable with water and are resistant. They separate the medium-sized dirt particles.

  • Cyclonic filters
  • .

    .

Normally made of plastic, they collect the thickest and coarsest dirt: hair, lint, very small objects... It is difficult for them to break, but it is easy that, in an oversight, they end up in the trash.

The more we take care of our appliances, not only the longer they will last, with the consequent economical and ecological savings, but their operation, during their period of use, will be more effective and efficient.
In the case of vacuum cleaners, good maintenance saves work, time and money, since good maintenance optimizes the energy consumption of the appliance.
See you in the next post, where we will continue to discuss the maintenance of other types of vacuum cleaners.
    Greetings, and good luck!!!
